Sintra Railway Station: Portuguese Azulejo Tiles

Sintra Portugal

The one thing you will notice about Portugal is the use of tiles. Glazed, colourful tiles used to decorate stairs, walls, roofs and as street names. Mosaic tiles used in paving streets and squares, usually blocks in black and white and forming many decorative patterns. Terracotta clay roof tiles creating swathes of rippling colour when viewed from above, and as in this case, tiles creating beauty in a very utilitarian building.
